Dree Festival Date and Venue
Ziro is the land of the Apatani tribe where the Dree festival takes place from the 4th of July but the main celebration happens on the 5th of July every year. There are three different villages in old Ziro where the Dree festival happens: Hija, Hong, and Biirii.
About Dree Festival
Dree festival is celebrated by the Apatani tribe for good harvesting. The rituals during this festival are performed by a few selected priests. The ceremony starts with sacrificing chicken or other animals then the priests check the liver of the sacrificed animal to see whether the ritual is successful or not. Then their traditional dance ‘Daminda’ takes place. Women of all ages can participate in this traditional dance. Cucumber with ‘Apong’ or local rice beer and ‘Yatang’ or rice pudding cooked in bamboo is served as prasad to everyone present on the festival grounds. Different kinds of stalls are also there on the festival ground where you can try other traditional food of the tribe and traditional clothing stalls are also there. Everything is very affordable here.
