History of Ambubachi Mela
Ambubachi Mela is about Devi Sati. At the time of her death her body parts fell at different locations, where Kamakhya temple is said to be the place where sati's yoni (female sexual part) fell. This led to yoni worship practices in Assam.
Why is Ambubachi Mela celebrated?
The reason for the temple to be closed for the first 3 days during the Ambubachi Mela is that it is said that Goddess Kamakhya experiences her annual menstrual cycle. This time is said to be a period of rest and purification for the Goddess. Though the temple remains closed, priests conduct secret rituals in the Garbha Griha for 3 days. On the fourth day, the temple reopens thereby beginning the Ambubachi Mela.
What happens during Ambubachi Mela
After the close of the temple for days when the gates open on 4th day, devotees stand in long queues and padyatra and trek uphill to reach the mandir once opened.
Following their visit to the temple, the followers hope to see the sacred prasad of Kamakhya temple, Angodak, and Angabastra, as well as catch a first look at the yoni-shaped stone that represents the goddess Kamakhya. Angodak, or Maa Kamakhya Devi's red-colored holy water, is said to be released throughout the three-day menstrual cycle.
It is a concoction of sindoor (vermilion) and holy water. Angabastra, also known as ambubachi bastra, is the crimson cloth. It is difficult to obtain these unique prasads from Kamakhya Temple unless you have a strong relationship with the temple priests. It's thought that during the three days of closure, a white cloth is wrapped around Yoni's sculpture. Nevertheless, the material becomes crimson after three days. Nobody is aware of the true cause of it.
