Thrissur Pooram is one of the largest celebrated festivals of Kerala. Thrissur Pooram is celebrated on the Pooram day in April Or May every year. This festival has been celebrated for 200 years Now. 

Thrissur Pooram attracts not only Indians but also international devotees. This festival is celebrated for 36 hours with night-long fireworks, colorful kudamattam, and an Elephant procession on the last day. 

On the final day of the Thrissur Pooram festival, there is a procession held by 15 elephants marching from Thiruvambadi Temple where the main elephant carries the Lord Krishna's idol.

History Of Thrissur Pooram

Shakthan Thampuran, the ruler of Cochin from 1790 to 1805, initiated the Thrissur Pooram festival. This temple festival, dating back over 200 years, is renowned for its rich cultural display. In 1796, heavy rains prevented a group of temples from participating in the prominent Arattupuzha Pooram. In response, Shakthan Thampuran established the Thrissur Pooram in the month of Medam. Since then, this temple festival has been celebrated annually with great splendor. Today, it is one of the most popular temple festivals celebrated worldwide.


Where is it Celebrated

The Thrissur Pooram Festival is celebrated at Vadakkunnathan Temple in thrissur. 

People from around the world visit this festival. There is a large procession of 50 elephants that starts the festival and festival goes on for 36 hours. Another attraction of the festival are the night long fireworks at the Vedikkettu.
