The temple is situated on an island named Mandhata, close to Khandwa city in the Narmada River, located in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, India. People say the island's shape resembles the Devanagari symbol ॐ. It is situated at a distance of 75 km from Indore. The road is good but heavily trafficked. It took us 2 hours to reach the temple.

There are two main Shiva temples here. One temple is on the island and is dedicated to Omkareshwar, whose name means "Lord of Omkara" or "Lord of the Om sound." The other temple is on the southern bank of the Narmada River on the mainland and is dedicated to Mamleshwar (Amaleshwar), whose name means "Immortal Lord" or "Lord of the Immortals or Devas."

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga

Omkareshwar, one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located on an Om-shaped island in the river Narmada. 

Positioned just downstream of the Omkareshwar dam, the temple enjoys a picturesque setting where the river gracefully forks around the island, ensuring a continuous flow of water around the temple throughout the year. Access to the temple is facilitated by a suspension bridge connecting the mainland to the island or by boat.

The circular path around Omkar Hill is a parikrama path, its approximately 7 km and has many ups and downs stairs. on this parikrama path, several temples and ashrams are on the way. The confluence of two rivers is also on the path.

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Darshan

  • The rush for darshan at the Omkareshwar Temple varies depending on the day and time.
  • On average, the darshan process takes about 2 to 3 hours.
  • For those who wish to expedite the darshan, VIP Darshans are available.
  • VIP Darshan Tickets are not issued by any committee.
  • Various priests at the temple premises offer VIP Darshans for 200 rupees per person for entry.
  • No physical tickets are provided, and if you're in a group of 10 or more, you can negotiate a reduced price.
  • Upon payment, the priests guide you from the exit steps toward the temple, where you wait until they gather more people for the darshan.
  • Groups of 50 to 100 people are sent for darshan at once.
  • It's important to note that VIP Darshan is essentially a cut in the regular darshan waiting line and doesn't offer a truly special darshan experience.
  • The entrance for VIP darshan is from the backside of the main temple, and the process can take approximately 20 to 25 minutes for darshan.
  • VIP darshan candidates are directed to join the regular darshan line.
  • To facilitate this, the regular darshan line is momentarily halted to allow VIP darshan entrants to experience the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga darshan.

Mamleshwar Jyotirling

The Mamleshwar Temple is a sacred Hindu temple in the holy town of Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh, located just 1 km from Omkareshwar Bus Station. People consider it an essential visit when exploring Omkareshwar.

The temple, also known as Amleshwar or Amareshwar temple, stands on the southern bank of the Narmada River, right across from the Omkareshwar temple. Many believe that a pilgrimage to Omkareshwar is incomplete without showing reverence to the Amareshwar of Mamleshwar temple. It is said to house half of the 4th Jyotirlinga, with the other half situated in the Omkareshwar Temple. The temple is near the Gomukh Ghat on the mainland.

Helicopter Service from Ujjain to Indore

The Government has inaugurated Air Pilgrimage Seva for devotees visiting the jyotirlingas to boost tourism and connectivity. Now devotees who wish to visit the two jyotirlingas: Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain and Omkareshwar in Indore can cover both of them by helicopter. 

The package will cost Rs. 12,524.

By Road:

For travelers journeying from Ujjain, a practical choice is to board a bus headed to the Omkareshwar Temple. The bus journey, costing Rs. 320 per person, takes approximately 5 to 6 hours. Upon reaching the Omkareshwar Bus Stop, the temple is a mere 1.5 kilometers away. To cover this short distance with ease, one can opt for an auto-rickshaw, with the typical fare being Rs. 20 per person. This option provides a convenient and efficient means to reach the revered Omkareshwar temple from Ujjain.


By Train: 
You can take a train to Indore Railway Station. From the Indore Station to Omkareshwar Temple the distance is about 80 km. You can take a bus from the railway station to reach Omkareshwar Temple. You can also opt for a Cab or rent a bike to reach Omkareshwar Temple from Indore Railway Station. 


How to Reach From Omkareshwar Temple to Mamleshwar Temple

Pilgrims may reach Omkareswar by walking at a distance of 1 ½ km from Amaleswar through the bridge constructed on the Narmada River. You can also opt for the boat rides that take you to the other end for Rs. 100 - 150 per person.
